i just realized i haven't updated about russia.

well let's see, i saw lots of churches. in the hermitage museum (l'ermitage in french or zermitage in russian) in saint petersburg i saw...well...tons of really cool stuff (including a michelangelo statue) but the highlight for me (damn you jeuling) was The Red Room by Matisse. I have to say though...I almost like the reproductions better. The red paint in the background is suprisingly...non-monochromatic. there were also tons of Picassos, which where all amazing.

For some strange reason the museum lets you take pictures inside, so I have photos of all these pieces.

i also went to red square in Moscow where Lenin is burried. Well, burried is a loose term, he's actually embalmed and on display. Fortuatly the tomb wasn't open, because if it had been I think I might have gone in out of curiousity and promptly lost my lunch.

while in red square i went to see one of the infamous metro (subway) stops. it was nice and all that, but the kicker is that a few hours later a suicide bomber tried to blow up a metro station about 2 miles up the line. i read about it the paper the next day and was like "wow...that's not to cool."

on that note, while i was about halfway between saint petersburg and moscow we got word that two planes had gone out of the moscow airport and crashed almost simultaneously a few miles later. they were both national flights, so we weren't terribly worried, but still. the thing is that most russians didn't even seem to bat an eyelash at it, unlike americans would have.

then of course there was the whole situation with the school being held hostage, which happened pretty much the day i left. I have to say, i was pretty happy to be leaving right when i did.

whenever i travel i tend to learn a million times more history and all that than i ever have in any classroom. this time i got a double benefit because i got to learn history and a new language. i'm actually going to take russian this year.

i went into russia thinking that communist countries were on to something (having been to cuba about 2 years ago). i now understand why americans are brought up to hate communism before they even know what it is. is cuba i think che and fidel actually did a pretty good job of creating social systems without taking away huge amounts of personal liberties.

russia, however, its a VERY different story. after seeing some of the palaces of the czars, i understand how big the wealth dichotimy really was, and why it made sense to end is by ...er...revolutioning (that should be a word) and changing the political system to communism. however, the leaders (people like stalin and lenin) exacted a HUGE fee. not a monotary fee, obviously, more like a death toll fee. the number of people that they randomly rounded up (claiming they were against the government in some way) and put to work in labor campus is astronomical.

the whole system was also just really inefficient.

however, everyone (who wasn't sent to a labor camp) had a house, medical care, and food provided by the government. there was also almost no unemployment (though this partically ties back into the inefficent system). it is because of these aspects that some people actually are nostalgic for 'old times.'

i read a book while i was there called Around the Bloc, which was very fitting i felt. Its basically a compilation of the experiences of a girl (who's about 26 now) who visited Moscow, Beijing, and Havana. Pertainent, indeed.

That's all for now.

i am such a loser.
i'm in russia and what do i do? why, find an internet cafe or course.

anyway, so yeah, I'M IN RUSSIA. its awesome and beautiful and all that. i seriously feel like i've been on a tour of the communist world. first cuba, now here. its so cool though.

i have so much to say and only 15 minutes of internet time, so i'll just say that i miss everyone like its my job and that russia is wonderful (though i feel like ass today for no apparent reason).

see y'all (or at least some of you) starting the first.

the highlight of my day night:

so at like 11 o'clock i decided that i couldn't possibly go on without a DQ blizzard. so i went in search of one with my friend GPS. i found about 3 dairy queens, none of which were open, of course.

in the middle of my search i happened upon a high speed car chase with like 10 cops. it was intense. hehe, the car they were chasing was a jeep grand cherokee. what kinda fool has high speed car chase in a jeep grand cherokee?

it was a white trash kinda night (meaning i looked like white trash and wandered into a rather seedy area).

such is life.

zim says: what have you discovered about planet earth?
grr says: i saw a squirrel. he was doing like this: (see icon).

its SO funny.

i also have a filler bunny icon. that will reveal itself later.

went to the hospital with emma today. she has pink eye. if i catch pink eye, i will cry (no rhyme intended). i don't wanna put more antibiotics in my system.

i'm going home tomorrow. eeeeee!

yesterday i went to this cute little french resturant in town. can we talk about how good their bagettes with brie and jam are? i think i have a new addiction.

tonight = out to dinner somewhere and cosmic bowling.

oh yeah, and yesterday stacia and i had a normal conversation after she interogated me for a little while about why i called her the other day.
i wonder how long she'll stay single

i think i just had one of my most successful moments with computers EVER.
I just spent like an hour and a half putting VERY boring documentation into like 30 pieces of code and when i finishes i got working what i wanted to get working.
